From Food Desert to Food Gardens: Turn Apartment Lawns Into Urban Farms
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Nearly 1 million Californians live in “food deserts” where there is no nearby supermarket or large grocery store.
The Edible Apartment Project wants to grow 2 new urban farms on apartment lawns in L.A. a city with many food deserts. This project creates food security, healthy living and community.
With your 100% of your donations, we will help sponsor two new urban farm plots, as well as education, maintenance plans, and everything these apartment gardens need to thrive.
The Edible Apartment is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We re-purpose underutilized land in urban areas - particularly on apartment building sites - to create an organic food source, educate and inspire people to take charge of their well-being and community.
As part of our community outreach, we offer regular gardening and wellness-related classes, farm-to-table functions, “TEA” Parties and garden work days. Our mission also includes using our resources for rehabilitation. That includes partnering with prisons, addiction recovery facilities and Veterans to share the healing benefits of gardening, cooking and community. We are a 100% volunteer organization that was founded by Executive Director, Jill Volat, and is run (almost entirely) by fellow women visionaries.
"I am BEYOND THRILLED that you’ve selected The Edible Apartment - Thank You!! All of my hard work is finally bearing fruit - thank you! I am so grateful that we can continue to put more organic urban farms all over the city for everyone to enjoy!"
$5,000 would be budgeted accordingly:
It would provide 2 new Edible Apartment Gardens including all materials for:
* Sheet mulching
* Soil amending
* New organic soil
* Compost and organic plant food
* All organic starts and seeds
* Maintenance plan and list of 12-month crop rotation
* Training for garden residents on how to care for their new urban farm
* Two follow up visits from our green team to trouble shoot, answer questions and advise.
